Herons
Watch at The Narrows Basin is a remarkable family cottage retreat
and base for activities and excursions. The safe warm water is
a great place for children to polish their canoe or kayak skills.
There are experienced kayak and small sail instructors nearby
as well. Perhaps the whole family would enjoy a day-sail out to
one of Mahone Bay's famous islands or an evening sail tour of
Lunenburg Harbour on the Eastern Star.
Minutes
away is Oak Island with its fabled history of treasure and treasure
hunters.
There are many beaches in the area, and they're
not crowded. You could go to a different beach every day of your
stay.
Osprey
Ridge and the Chester and Lunenburg Golf Courses are all
within 15 or 20 minutes drive.
There is horseback riding in Mahone Bay, Festivals and Events around the province. Ask Nova Scotia Tourism for your FREE Doers & Dreamers Guide at 1-800-565-0000.
You'll
find whale watching tours, famous Nova Scotian folk art, Inuit
art, fine art, crafts, wonderful shops, Provincial and National
Parks to die for! Do catch the Sunday Flea Market in Mahone
Bay and the Thursday Farmer's Market in Lunenburg (get there
early!). There's also a Friday Organic Farmers Market in Mahone
Bay year-round.
Enjoy
the many historical and scenic sights on the historied South Shore
of Nova Scotia.
Mahone Bay's churches, Peggy's Cove, the UNESCO
World Heritage Town of Lunenburg, Fort Pointe Ste. Marie on the
Lahave River (one of the first New World settlements), exquisite
Hirtle's Beach, Ovens Natural Park with its seacaves and gold,
Ross Farm, the excellent Fisheries Museum in Lunenburg;
all these and more are within an hour's
ramble by car. Day-trip to Kejimkujik National Park, Annapolis
Royal, or Halifax.
For some specific ideas of things to do, see Activities in the Area.
Nova
Scotia is wonderful place to explore nature (a birder's paradise!)
and your relationship to the outdoors. An "endless"
walking trail passes through the Herons Watch backyard, waiting
to take you on simple adventures back to yourself.
